Demi couldn’t help but roll her eyes, Taylor was so predictable. “I’m sure, Joe has been begging me to hang out with him for days,” she said sweetly. “But have fun at your little slumber party!”Demi froze. The party sounded fun, but she knew Taylor didn’t really want her there. Besides, it would be too tempting; Taylor was a fantastic baker, and Demi on drank to get drunk, not socially. “Um..actually, I have plans…with Joe,” she couldn’t help but add smugly. “And I doubt you want him there.”Demi shrugged. “Um, I’m not really sure, Disney kinda wants me to focus on promoting the movie and the tour this summer, but I’m hoping I can release some new stuff soon,” Demi said, pulling her sweatshirt over her hands nervously. She wondered whether Taylor noticed her abnormal outfit for such a hot day, but decided it didn’t matter. Her, ahem, little secret, had gotten out once before and disaster had followed. She wasn’t taking off her sweatshirt.Demi nodded curtly at Taylor’s friend. “Nice to meet you.” She turned back to Taylor, wishing she’d put on heels so she wouldn’t feel so short. “Wow, World Tour, that’s awesome,” Demi said, her jealousy creeping in again. Once again she was going to spend a summer opening for the Jonas Brothers, probably singing only half the amount that Taylor got to. “I’ve just…um, you know. Filmed Camp Rock 2,” she mumbled, feeling extremely juvenile. “Writing songs. Hanging out with friends.” …that don’t include Selena, she thought bitterly. She knew it wasn’t Taylor’s fault they’d fought, but she couldn’t help but blame the other girl. She felt replaced.Demi forced a smile, gesturing back towards her house. “Yeah, I live over there…I’m fine,” she said out of habit, brushing her hair behind her ear. She looked Taylor over, trying not to let her jealousy show. The girl was gorgeous, no wonder Joe liked her. She had a good six inches on Demi, but nevertheless she was probably twenty or thirty pounds lighter, by Demi’s guess. She had the perfect All-American girl look, and everyone knew Joe preferred blondes. Demi frowned, twirling a strand of her own black hair around her finger. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she repeated, looking back up at the older girl. “How…how have you been?”Everything was going well for Taylor. She had just spent the last night out on the town with her closest friends in Hollywood. Today was the day she was moving in and thank God she had one of her best friends Ashley there to help her move in. Just as she was directing a moving man with a load of…
Taylor smiled brightly at the younger girl feeling a little more at ease knowing that she too was timid. Maybe it was bitchy, but she couldn’t help but feel empowered knowing that Demi was intimidated by her. There was probably some psychological term for it, when the girl who has everything you want envies you. Or maybe they just call it ironic.
“I’m doing well. I just finished off a world tour and I’ve decided to make the move to LA. It’s nice to have a change every once in a while I think.”
I looked to Ashley, who no doubt was rolling her eyes under those big sunglasses, “This is my dear friend, Ashley. She’s a stylist out here in LA, I’m not sure if you two have met.”
A movie. That was so cool. Last time Taylor tried her hand at a movie she was brutally attacked my critics and fans alike. It was just a small part and she could admit that she was no actress but did they have to be so mean?
“Are you releasing a new album soon? I really loved the last one. I remember seeing you on the tour for it.” Okay so maybe she was a little jealous of Demi’s ability to sing. Girl had some pipes. And sure Taylor had her beaten out in songwriting but at least Demi had the credibility of those pipes.
Taylor sighed. She knew was like to be told you couldn’t release what you wanted to. It was the worst part of being an artist. That was part of why Taylor was moving to LA. She needed to get out of a place where she was constantly being told how to act and speak. Ashley spoke up again when the conversation hit an awkward pause, “You should come to our house warming party, if you’re free I mean? It’s tomorrow night from 7 to whenever.”
I tensed a little at the offer. Sure Ashley was moving into the guest house but it was still my house. But at the end I forced a smile, “Yeah Dems, it’ll be fun. Cookies, wine, silly games.”
Ouch. To say that the Joe comment stung Taylor was an understatement. It was a well known fact that Taylor was far from over the boy band king and she didn’t like that Demi was using that to her advantage. That was just one of the reasons Demi irked her. How dare she hold that over her head? And furthermore, why would she go and pursue the guy that ruined her? It didn’t make any sense. “Are you sure?” she found herself saying instinctually. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. Plus Selly will be there. It’d be nice for all of us to catch up.” Two could play at this game.
Taylor was shocked that Demi’s tone took a sweet turn. Did this girl know no boundaries?
“And you have fun with a guy whose hair is straighter than he is,” Ashley quipped back before dragging me into the front door.
Once we were out of ear shot she looked to me and said “She’s not worth it Tay. Now come on, we’re going to go party.”
